I agree with some of your points here and think telling is better in various scenarios. But I still think, especially for those new to writing, it's so important to keep in mind. The magic that comes from reading something is being invovled in the story, guessing ahead, figuring out little riddles for yourself... and as the great Stephen King puts its you want the reader to "tie the other half of the bow"... if you TELL them everything, there is no magic. You have to let the reader figure things out and draw their own conclusions. I even think show don't tell is good advice beyond writing ... like if you want to get people to stop doing something, SHOW them a beautiful alternative, don't tell them they're bad/wrong/etc. People like to feel like they reached their own conclusion, like they were involved... and thats what show don't tell helps great writers achieve.
