Finding My Breath Again

Trials and Triumphs in Breathwork

Right now, you might be eating cereal. You might be avoiding work. You might be practicing the spoons. You might be practicing the spoons while eating cereal, which is probably pretty messy. One thing you’re doing for sure is breathing.

I do love cereal. Photo by Nyana Stoica on Unsplash

Last year I read Breath, which I highly recommend and included in my top 5 books of 2021. The book gives historical insight into the rising rates of sleep apnea and many other modern ailments relating to this ancient involuntary behavior. How did we lose our connection to something so primal, so essential? Why have sleep apnea rates risen so dramatically in the past 20 years? Why can some people hold their breath for 5 minutes while others need a mask to sleep at night?

I’m back to thinking about breathing because I was connected through a mutual friend with a new app called Othership. As the founder told me, “We want to be the Calm of the breathwork world.” During that quick Zoom, I was kind and said things like “Cool, I’ll check it out,” the same way you say yeah sure, let’s get a bite sometime to someone you don’t really care if you eat with or not.

I was being friendly, but mainly thinking, “Whatever dude, I breathe… just fine. I even read a book about it.” I live in a world (#puertoescondido) inundated with faux gurus and yogis…
