Author's 10 Favorite Dystopian Novels

I’ve always loved fucked up books about the future

6 min readApr 3, 2025

Before I share my list, let’s clarify what a dystopian novel is for those who might need a reminder.

According to Webster, it’s a very fucked up story about the future. Just joshing, Webster's definition of dystopia is actually: an imagined world or society in which people lead wretched, dehumanized, fearful lives.

My joke wasn’t that far off.

I think we enjoy them for the same reasons we love serial killer podcasts and shows about shitty jobs—somewhere deep down it makes us appreciate our current lives a bit more.

All of these books below made me grateful for this version of our world, and I think we could all use a bit of that right now.

Oh, dear god what the fuck is happening.

They might even have the power to motivate you to be on the right side of history, to help avoid a full-blown Hunger Games down the road. To be more Katniss than President Snow.

It certainly feels like the world is falling apart and becoming more of a hellscape by the week, but things could be far worse. If you need a reminder, grab a copy of any of the books on this list.
