What do you do when the power goes out? Most people I know don’t have to consider this question. For most people, the power just works. Most people don’t have to consider where the watts are coming from, if the grid is being overworked, or who fixes it when it breaks. However, I do.

I live in a little Mexican beach town with an ironic name—Puerto Escondido. Puerto Escondido is certainly no longer a “hidden port.” It has fully arrived on the international traveler's map. It’s had a sneaky reputation for years of being an authentically Oaxacan surf haven with amazing food, mezcal, beaches, and culture—but, now that secret is out. You can find dozens of travel vlogs on YouTube about Puerto Escondido and NomadList even currently rates it in their top ten destinations for remote workers (although the Wifi is still a daily struggle for those working remotely). If Puerto were to be renamed in 2022 it would be Puerto Encontrado (Found Port).

I can’t blame people for flocking to Puerto, because I did. I took all of the money I’ve ever made in my life out of the bank and bought a piece of land here. I’m committed. I’m a Puerto guy. I’ll probably get a tattoo about…
